While not a likely guess, the Whooping Crane is the tallest bird in North America. In the 1940s the species numbers were as low as around 20 birds. Today, through captive breeding, wetland management, and an innovative program that teaches young cranes how to migrate, there species numbers are about 600. It is among our rarest birds, and a testament to the tenacity and creativity of conservation biologists
